Crewe are to take Morecambe duo Darran Kempson and Scott Davies on trial with a view to permanent moves. Although Crewe are continuing to pursue Liam Fontaine, Dario Gradi acknowledges that his chances of signing Fontaine are slim. Gradi has therefore opted to follow up his interest in the young duo.

Vital Crewe exclusively revealed Gradi’s interest in Kempson last week, Kempson Impresses Gradi. Gradi discovered Kempson by chance, as he impressed during the Conference play-off final. Glyn Chamberlain provided Gradi with more information on Kempson, revealing he had seen the ex-Preston centre-back featuring for England’s semi-professional side. Kempson is available on a free transfer, and has indicated a willingness to undergo a trial period before signing. Kempson is described by Dario as ‘big, strong and aggressive’, and ‘no shrinking violet’. Kempson is likely to be taken to Portugal on the club’s pre-season training camp, and will feature in at least one pre-season friendly back in England. Kempson is not expected to be a first-team regular next season, and would be considered as the fourth centre back at the club.

Scott Davies, meanwhile, is a 19-year old goalkeeper and came through the ranks at Morecambe. Davies is also expected to go to Portugal and should the transfer be completed, Davies would be Ben Williams’ back-up next season with Stuart Tomlinson set to join Burton Albion on loan.
