Crewe Alexandra slipped back into the relegation zone as Callum Wilson scored twice for Coventry City in a 2-1 home defeat at Gresty Road.

Striker Wilson opened his account just before the half-hour but Jordan Clarke headed into his own net to equalise following the break. However, Wilson broke away to add his second inside the final ten minutes despite the home side having the better of it.

Anthony Grant was recalled in place of Abdul Osman with Matt Tootle taking the captain’s armband, although it was Wilson immediately shooting over before Uche Ikpeazu and Mark Ellis were wide in reply.

But it was the visitors moving ahead as Wilson tapped in after Franck Moussa had struck the foot of an upright. Ikpeazu found the side-netting at the other end and Andy Webster escaped penalty claims after appearing to pull back the on loan Watford forward.

Coventry keeper Joe Murphy then tipped over from Mathias Pogba before Tootle fired wide and Chuks Aneke narrowly missed from a free-kick.

The Alex came out after the break with Ikpeazu calling Murphy into further action, Pogba wide and Tootle seeing an effort blocked. And they were to be rewarded when Ellis challenged George Evans’ 62nd minute corner and the ball went in off defender Clarke.

Skipper Tootle soon forced Murphy into another stop and an Evans free-kick was turned over while recalled midfielder Grant drove wide.

Both Brad Inman and Ikpeazu were later denied by the Sky Blues keeper, until home substitute Byron Moore miscontrolled and Wilson raced away for the winner, despite further efforts from Tootle, Aneke and Moore.
