Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis admitted his side had been punished for their mistakes following a 5-0 home defeat to Coventry City.

On loan Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong grabbed a first-half hat-trick and Norwich City loanee Jacob Murphy added a couple more for the visitors in a really comprehensive triumph.

“We got punished for mistakes today and that makes it very difficult,” Davis told Crewe’s official website. “Being 4-0 down at half time and out of it, you are playing for pride and from an attacking point of view, we kept going but couldn’t put one or two of those chances away.

“It was difficult but we showed more guts and desire in the second half,” he continued. “They would have eased off being in the position they were in but there were signs of some of the things we have been working on but those mistakes made it so difficult to remain in the game. We have to stick together and show some real desire and determination.”
