Crewe Alexandra remain rooted to the foot of the table after their former trainee Dan Gardner struck twice for Chesterfield in a 2-1 success at Gresty Road.

The 25-year-old began the scoring with a deflected effort but skipper David Fox levelled proceedings before the break.

However, Garnder added his second of the contest with a volley from Liam O’Neil’s cross as the hour-mark approached.

The Railwaymen were still searching for their first home win of the season but fell behind when Rai Simons delivered for Gardner to send a deflected finish inside the post.

Jay O’Shea and Mani Dieseruvwe saw further efforts for the visitors before Fox drove an equaliser from around twenty-yards following Ryan Colclough’s assist.

George Cooper was then kept out by the oncoming Tommy Lee and Brad Inman sent the rebound behind.

But it was the visitors restoring their earlier lead as Gardner volleyed into the turf and high over keeper Ben Garratt.
