Crewe look set to start the 2007/08 season against Brighton with Nicky Maynard and Shaun Miller as the front two. The pair impressed in the 3-1 win against Stockport County last Saturday. With a deal to bring a new striker to the club looking ‘highly unlikely’ the youngsters are to be given the chance to shine.

Crewe had been looking to strengthen ahead of the big kick off but have been thwarted in their bid to land a striker. As reported on Crewe Vital at the weekend Nick Chadwick was one of the options but the club were concerned with his injury record and looks as if a deal for the Stoke born striker is now dead.

The club also approached Frazier Campbell of Manchester United but the Premiership Champions are reluctant to let the youngster out on loan.

Failure to land a striker will be a big blow to the club and fans. Of course, a deal could happen but it looks unlikely to happen before the start of the season which is just 4 days away.

  • Think I’m on my own not being particularly worried about this.
We still have one of the best strikers in the division in Maynard and I’m sure that Lowe, Miller, Pope and possibly Farquarson will between them provide enough support now that the balance between attack and defence seems to be a bit more sensible.
    I guess time will tell…

  • i still think we need another striker, pope is way off the pace, farquharson could come good and i’d be tempted to have him on bench…a big ask for nicky – a lot rests on his shoulders. miller will be player of the season.

  • Oh yeah, I agree we ideally need another striker, I just don’t think it’s the make or break scenario that some have made it out to be. (to be fair that’s not really come from anything that I’ve read on this site)

  • I think we can cope for the first month or two of the season with M&M but once teams realise the (physical) weakness, we’ll have problems. Teams will just start kicking M&M off the park, and it won’t take much with the size of them.
