Former Alex striker Nicky Maynard has turned down a contract extension at Bristol City, leaving him free to leave the Robins in the summer unless sold in January.

Bristol City confirmed today that Maynard wouldn’t be discussing a new contract any further and will be open to offers for the striker once the January transfer window opens.

Maynard moved from the Alex for £2.25million back in the summer of 2008 having burst onto the scene with 32 goals in 52 league starts. Attached to the deal was a clause that sees the Alex claim 20% of any profit Bristol City make on the 25 year old.

The club had always hoped to profit further from the deal and it looked likely in the summer when Maynard was subject to intense transfer speculation linking him with £6million moves to the likes of Leicester City.

Today’s news however looks like it’ll be a huge blow to the Alex directors. With purse strings already extremely tight, a decent sell on from Maynard would likely be the difference between having to sell a current player and not.
