Match Report – Newport County vs Crewe Alexandra

|

Goals in each half from strikers Harry McKirdy and Jordan Bowery gave Crewe Alexandra a win that sees them 12 points above the drop-zone with an away win at Rodney Parade against Newport County yesterday afternoon.

Manager David Artell named an unchanged team from Tuesday night`s home win against Forest Green so Tom Lowery, Charlie Kirk and McKirdy all retaining their places in the starting 11 whilst the bench is boosted by Ryan Wintle`s return from injury, with him coming in for Ollie Finney.

The opening chance of the game came in the 5th minute as the hosts won a free-kick which Robbie Willmott fired over from just outside the penalty area whilst another free-kick was fired into the wall from the left-foot of Matt Dolan from a similar distance 7 minutes later. The first corner of the game produced the next chance as Willmott`s cross was headed wide by Ben Tozer on 22 minutes before McKirdy opened the scoring 4 minutes later.

Kirk`s chipped ball in was taken down by the on-loan Aston Villa striker, beat Demetriou before rolling the ball past Joe Day in the Newport goal. The goal galvanised the visitors who also produced an effort for Callum Ainley following good hold-up play from Bowery, the midfield man shooting straight at Day before Harry Pickering`s corner was headed wide from Crewe captain George Ray.

After a half-time change for the Alex which saw Lowery replaced by James Jones (making his first appearance of the season), Newport almost had an opportunity to level the score but a collision between Pickering and Willmott was waved away on 52 minutes before Bowery extended the lead on the hour-mark. First, he played Kirk in with a neat touch with the midfielder hitting the post with the forward following-up from close-range. The deficit was halved with 10 minutes to play as Demetriou headed home from a corner-kick but Crewe held on despite late pressure to extend our unbeaten run.

Crewe`s next game sees a trip to The Hive to play Barnet on Good Friday before a home game against Port Vale on Easter Monday.
