2 goals from Mikael Mandron, either side of a Tom Eastman header on his 250th appearance for the U`s, gave hosts Colchester United the win at the Colchester Community Stadium, despite Jordan Bowery giving the visitors Crewe Alexandra the lead in the first half.

Crewe manager David Artell made 2 changes for this game with Brad Walker coming in for the suspended Michael Raynes at the back with club captain Chris Dagnall replacing George Cooper as he joined Bowery and former Colchester striker Chris Porter in a front 3.

The opening chance of the game came in the 2nd minute with Colchester midfielder Kyel Reid shooting wide from the edge of the area before Crewe`s first chance of the game came just before the quarter-hour mark as Porter missed the target after a good ball from Tom Lowery. The Alex took the lead midway through the half as Dagnall`s cross was finished by Bowery, his third goal in 5 games.

The next chance came on 28 minutes as Bowery shot straight at United goalkeeper Sam Walker before Zoumana Bakayago fizzed a low cross that Dagnall couldn`t get on the end of. With 10 minutes left to go of the half, Drey Wright (son of former Alex midfielder Jermaine Wright) shot over from long range and Bowery missed the chance to double his and Crewe`s tally shooting wide after great work from Bakayago. Colchester levelled the scoreline on 39 minutes as Mandron turned in Reid`s corner before right wing-back Ryan Jackson fired over from a tight angle.

Into the second half, where Jackson found Brandon Hanlan who couldn`t hit the target minutes after the break before Dagnall drew a fantastic save out of Walker. Mandron could have added his second following Lowery giving the ball away with the striker hitting the side-netting of Dave Richards` goal with the Welshman beaten for a second time on the hour mark.

Another Reid corner was scored at the second attempt by Eastman, his first effort hitting the bar before he headed home the rebound. Mandron did have his second of the game 20 minutes from time as he got on the end of Jackson`s right-wing cross with both sides settling for the result from that point.

Crewe host Rotherham United in the 1st Round of the FA Cup next Saturday.
