Former Nantwich Town loanee Sam Cosgrove scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time as Carlisle completed a league double against Crewe Alexandra at Brunton Park yesterday afternoon.

Manager David Artell made 3 changes from the home victory against Grimsby on New Years` Day with Eddie Nolan coming in for the suspended Perry Ng, new signing Paul Green came in for the departed Conor Grant in central midfield whilst Jordan Bowery came in up front for the injured Chris Porter. After coming through a couple of games for the Under-23s this week, Ryan Wintle was amongst the substitutes and involved for the first time since September in the first-team picture.

The opening chance of the game came on 5 minutes with George Cooper playing Bowery through with the forward hitting the post with his shot before he couldn`t get enough on a Nolan cross minutes later. The first Carlisle chance came in the 19th minute with captain Danny Grainger narrowly missing the target from outside the area.

Carlisle had a penalty shout on the half-hour as James Brown got in on the United right, going down under pressure from Green but referee Chris Sarginson turned down the shouts. Cosgrove turned a volley goal-wards from the edge of the area before another Carlisle counter saw Reggie Lambe find the former Wigan man as his shot was turned behind by Ben Garratt.

After two changes from the hosts at the break which saw Luke Joyce come on to make his 450th appearance for Carlisle, it took until the hour-mark where Cooper lobbed the ball goal-wards with his effort landing on the roof of the net. Cosgrove had the ball in the net with 20 minutes to go but his effort was disallowed for offside but he wasn`t to be denied 5 minutes later as he headed home from a deflected Tom Parkes cross from the Carlisle right.

Our next game is at home to Wycombe Wanderers next Saturday afternoon.
