Match Preview – Notts County (A)

|

Tomorrow afternoon sees a trip to Harry Kewell’s Notts County team that is looking to kick-start their League 2 campaign the same way that Port Vale ended their winless streak away from home last Saturday. Amongst the players in the hosts’ squad are Alex Academy graduates Matt Tootle and David Vaughan (pictured).

So far this season they have had a disaster of a season after a 0-0 draw against Colchester United on the opening day was followed by 6 successive defeats against Cambridge United, Yeovil Town, Newport County, Lincoln City, Forest Green Rovers and Exeter City before a couple of draws against Stevenage and Northampton Town in the last 2 games. In the cups, they lost on penalties at Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup and a 2-1 defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL Trophy in a group that also contains Newcastle United’s Under-21 team and Doncaster Rovers.

Looking back in the archives, the two teams have met 45 times with Notts County leading the head-to-head with 22 wins to 14 with 9 draws. Crewe’s biggest win came in their first home game against the Magpies with a 5-1 victory in October 1895 whilst County’s biggest win came in February 1894 as the score finished 9-1 at Meadow Lane. Both of last season’s games were home wins with the Alex winning 2-0 at the Alexandra Stadium in October whilst County won 4-1 in the corresponding fixture.

Who are the officials for the game?

The officials for this game see Andy Woolmer as the man in the middle where he is assisted by Jonathan Hunt and Geoffrey Russell with Matthew McGrath being the fourth official. During the last 5 seasons, the following Crewe games have been refereed by Woolmer:

  • Crewe Alexandra 1-2 Leyton Orient (18th January 2014) – Moore

  • Sheffield United 3-2 Crewe Alexandra (25th March 2016) – Fox, Davis
  • Crewe Alexandra 2-2 Port Vale (2nd April 2018) – Wintle, Kirk
