Match Preview – Newport County (A)

|

After last Saturday’s 6-0 victory against Morecambe saw the Alex sit on top for the week and whilst most Crewe fans saw a win coming, none of us were realistically thinking it would be by such a margin. This week sees a trip to Newport County’s Rodney Parade before a home Carabao Cup tie against League 1 Fleetwood Town.

Looking back in the archives, the two teams have met 38 times with both teams level on 12 wins each with 14 draws. Newport’s biggest win occurred in the very first meeting between the teams in October 1962 where they won 5-1 with Crewe’s biggest win was a 4-0 victory in April 1976. Last season’s games saw a 1-1 draw at the Alexandra Stadium, also in the second game of the season, whilst the Alex won in March in the return fixture.

I asked Newport supporter Taff from the Amber Army supporters group for their thoughts going into the game as well as their season predictions.

What do you think of Newport’s transfer activity over the summer?

We have seemingly replaced our out-going players and added more strength. Such as an aerial threat (Matt) and a player who can run at a defence (Marsh-Brown). Some good looking loan signings too.

What do you think the team will be for Saturday’s game?

Day, Pipe, Franks, Demetriou, Butler, Dolan, Crofts, Sheehan, Marsh-Brown, Matt, Amond
This based on the last selected team and where we lacked.

Who would you say is the one player that we should look for in the Exiles’ team?

Josh Sheehan. Very talented midfielder. The Kevin de Bruyne of League 2. In for a big season.

After several seasons in the Football League, how do you think Newport will do this season?

More of the same as last season. Mid-table again I feel. That would be acceptable to the fans too who are happy to not be dragged back into the relegation pack.

Who do you think will be promoted and relegated at the end of the season?

Lincoln. Notts County. MK Dons. Mansfield to go up
Morecambe and Macclesfield to go down
