Crewe Alexandra hauled themselves out of the relegation places with a massive 3-1 victory at fellow strugglers Shrewsbury Town.

Mathias Pogba put them in front seven minutes before the break and on loan Uche Ikpeazu added another early in the second period.

Midfielder Anthony Grant then strode away to settle the issue just before the end, although substitute Tom Bradshaw snatched an even later consolation.

Manager Steve Davis made a couple of changes with Pogba and Liam Nolan returning in front of more than 1,300 travelling supporters.

Shrewsbury included former Alex striker Shaun Miller, although it was Pogba shooting tamely at Chris Weale before Byron Moore tested him from the edge of the area. Moore also hoisted over a Brad Inman lay-off while Ben Garratt denied Miller’s low reply.

The visitors went in front as Pogba headed in Jon Guthrie’s 38th minute corner – to leave them with a crucial advantage at the interval.

That was added to soon after the restart when Ikpeazu received from Guthrie and expertly curled his finish into the top corner – his fourth goal for the club.

That prompted Paul Parry to reply onto the roof of the net and Tom Eaves to send another effort wide before Jon Taylor troubled only the side-netting. Garratt also thwarted Parry while Pogba had a shot deflected behind following a swift break from the visitors.

Crewe substitute Vadaine Oliver later headed a Moore cross wide, although that appeared to matter little when Grant chased away in the final minute and slid a third goal past Weale.

However, Bradshaw immediately responded with a good finish at the other end, but the contest was already well and truly decided by then.
