Goalkeeper Alan Martin isn’t content with simply making up the numbers at Crewe Alexandra and is determined to break into their starting eleven.

The 23-year-old agreed a new six-month deal this week with the challenge to prove himself after the frustration of spending last season consigned to the substitutes bench.

“There were a few demands on me, to come back lighter and fitter and I’ve proved that,” Martin explained to Alex’s official website. “Last year I got a bit complacent around February and March and I’d got to the point when I’d thought I’d have played a few games by then but I hadn’t.

“But I don’t want to be a training keeper who just makes up the numbers,” he added. “I want to play games not be on the bench doing nothing.”
