Manager Steve Davis was thrilled as young defender Kelvin Mellor signed a new two-year deal at Gresty Road.

That was despite the tempting offer of a three-year deal at Championship side Derby County – a move which prompted Alex to improve their original terms to the 21-year-old defender.

“It was a long process with Kelvin,” Davis admitted to Crewe’s official website. “But we have worked hard with him over five years and been very patient and loyal with him. He has returned that loyalty by signing a new two-year deal with us and everyone is delighted.”

Mellor made seventeen appeances for Crewe last term while scoring his first goal for the club against Bristol Rovers, including at Wembley in their play-off final victory over Cheltenham Town.
