Long & Lowery Score In First League Win In 2 Months

Goals from Chris Long and Tom Lowery saw Crewe Alexandra gain ground on the teams above them in the league after defeating Gillingham at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday.

Manager David Artell made four changes from last Friday’s 2-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers with Scott Kashket (playing as a right wing-back), Billy Sass-Davies, Luke Murphy and Chris Porter all returning while Terell Thomas, Callum McFadzean and Mika Mandron all dropping down to the bench while Scott Robertson serves the first game of a three-match ban.

The opening chance of the game came in the 3rd minute with Rio Adebisi having a shot that was saved by Chelsea loanee Jamie Cumming before Long would have an effort that was straight at the keeper a couple of minutes later. The hosts would take the lead in the 11th minute as Adebisi’s deep cross was kept alive by Kashket for Long to fire in from 6-yards out before Kashket would be next to test Cumming.

Gillingham would hit the post in the 36th minute as Tucker would turn a corner goalwards with Dave Richards denying John Akinde a couple of minutes before the break. The visitors would hit the post again just after the hour-mark before the Alex would hit the bar 10 minutes from time through Long. The Alex would double the lead in the 90th minute as a flowing move was ended with a 1-2 between Lowery and Porter seeing the midfielder roll the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Our next couple of games see the Alex have two away trips, at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night before a trip to Ipswich Town next Sunday.
