Crewe have failed to bring in a defender on loan from Manchester City after the deal was halted following news of a failed drug test for vice-captain Kolo Toure.

Striking up a deal with Alex legend David Platt, who is now first-team coach at Eastlands, Dario had travelled to watch the City reserves in action against Wigan on Tuesday night to give the potential transfer target, possibly City’s full back Shaleum Logan or the highly rated Reece Wabara, the once over.

However, just a deal was about to be struck David Platt had to call the deal off after it emerged Kolo Toure would be suspended, pending appeal, following his positive sample. It’s a second blow in as many weeks in Dario’s search for defensive re-enforcements having seen a move for City’s left back Ryan McGivern end through injury.

A frustrated Dario told the official website that the deal may not be completely dead but there’s no chance of it happening before tomorrow’s home game against Burton Albion.

‘I spoke with Platty about taking one of their defenders on loan and Manchester City were very good about it. He came highly recommended by David.

‘He was fine, good enough and the deal was virtually done and dusted. I think we just needed a final say so from Brian Marwood, but we didn’t envisage a problem.

‘I then received a call from Platty saying they had a problem with one of their players. They have a couple of injuries and then received the problem regarding Toure. They couldn’t let out guy go out and that is how highly they regard him there.

‘It is not totally dead but it won’t be happening before the weekend. This one is completely beyond my control and it is frustrating but there is nothing we can do.’
