Being given the captaincy will help bring the best out of midfielder Luke Murphy according to manager Steve Davis.

“He stepped up to it on Saturday so I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t give it to him in this game” – Steve Davis

The 22-year-old again leads out the side against early leaders Tranmere Rovers tomorrow after taking over the role last week for the victory against Coventry City. It followed predecessor Ashley Westwood leaving for Aston Villa the previous day.

“I think it will help his game and will give him that maturity and bit of experience he needs,” Davis told This is Staffordshire. “He’s having to deal with players and organise a bit more and have responsibility he’s not had before.

‘He stepped up to it on Saturday so I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t give it to him in this game,” he added. “His performances have been good since he got back in the team. He moans and groans a bit and is a bit like an old granny at times, but he’s a decent lad.”
