Dennis Lawrence could return to the Alex defence as early as Saturday after breaking his cheekbone. The Swansea loanee suffered the break in the 2-0 win at home to Yeovil last month but with the help of a mask he could be back to marshall the defence in Colchester at the weekend.

It would prove a welcome return with Sicknote McCready being forced off in the first half of last night’s draw at Walsall. Thin on the ground in defence Gudjon was forced to move Woodards in from midfield, bringing match winner Schumacher on to replace him.

Thordarson says that the Trinidad international will train with a protective mask this week and if Lawrence feels up to it he will be in the squad for the big game on Saturday.

Gudjon could also see the return of Marlon Broomes. Broomes was re-called by Blackpool on Friday afternoon due to injuries on the seaside leaving Gudjon to make last minute changes to his team at the weekend, thankfully though Blackpool’s injuries have subsided and they could now be looking at letting Broomes return to Gresty Road.
