Crewe Alexandra suffered late heartache and a sixth successive home defeat as Gillingham’s Rory Donnelly netted an injury-time winner.
Brad Inman had an early strike disallowed for handball and then saw another effort blocked by visiting goalkeeper Stuart Nelson before Adam King lifted the rebound over.
Fellow midfielder Chris Atkinson previously shot too high and King also sent an attempt straight at the keeper.
John Egan went closest at the other end when forcing Ben Garratt to turn aside but the visitors grew stronger after the break.
Substitute Cody McDonald was denied by Garratt and instantly sent the rebound against an upright. He also couldn’t get the necessary touch to an inviting Bradley Dack cross.
However, the Gills still moved to the top of the table when Donnelly dramatically curled in a winner off the far post in added time.
