Late Header Sees Tigers Defeat Alex

|

A late goal from Mallik Wilks 9 minutes from time gave Hull City their second win in the league this season against Crewe Alexandra at the KCOM Stadium yesterday afternoon, the Alex now sitting second-bottom of the league.

Manager David Artell named an unchanged matchday squad from last Saturday night’s 2-0 defeat at Charlton in the opening league game, both as far as the starting 11 and the bench.

The opening chance of the game came in the 10th minute for the hosts as George Honeyman’s inswinging corner was clawed away by Will Jaaskelainen before the keeper would make a decent save from Wilks to deny him from close range. The keeper almost turned provider as his long clearance found Owen Dale whose effort was saved by Ingram before Mika Mandron almost turned the ball in from inside the 6-yard box from Oli Finney’s low cross. Finney would also have an effort that was blocked as the visitors shaded the opening period.

It would continue into the second half with Mandron almost got on the end of a Dale cross with Hull getting back into the game with a double-change that would see James Scott and Thomas Mayer come on for Josh Magennis and Keane Lewis-Potter (which saw Wilks go through the middle in their front 3) midway through the half. They would take the lead with Mayer’s left-footed cross from the right-wing glanced in off the far-post by Wilks after a throw-in was taken short.

The next games for the Alex see us hosting MK Dons at the Alexandra Stadium next Saturday before playing Newcastle’s Under 21 side the following Tuesday in the second EFL Trophy game.

What can we take out of this game?

Yes, it was another game that we haven’t scored in, but in similar ways to the Charlton game last week, we were playing against a team that were playing Championship football in the last couple of months.

That said, we got into decent positions where we could have scored 1 or even 2 goals in the opening period (looking at the Dale and Mandron chances here) but we have to defend better and not switch off at the other end, regardless of whether it should have been a Hull throw-in or not.
