Late Header Sees Alex Defeat Bottom Club

Dan Agyei’s late winner saw Crewe Alexandra defeat bottom-of-the-league Colchester United at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday.

Interim manager Lee Bell named an unchanged from last Saturday’s 1-0 win against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup 1st Round with Zac Williams returning to the bench after an illness kept him out of last week’s game.

The first effort of the game came in the 8th minute with Samson Tovide’s effort well wide of Arthur Okonkwo’s goal for the visitors before the Alex keeper would make a great save to deny Luke Hannant’s drive from a free-kick played into the area.

The second half saw Eli King replace Rio Adebisi early in the second half, the latter going off with a knock, before Tom Eastman would be the next denied by Okonkwo on 55 minutes. The on-loan Arsenal keeper would save from Newby in the 71st minute before the Alex took the lead 10 minutes from time as Agyei headed in a cross from Tariq Uwakwe from close range.

The next games for the Alex travel to Swindon Town next Saturday before travelling to Barnsley in the FA Cup 2nd Round the following Saturday.

What can we take out of this game?

Three points thanks to the goalkeeper pulling off at least two really good saves – not quite what you’d want against the side bottom of the league in a game that was, at best, dull for the most part.

The team still lack creativity for the most part as the forward options seem to be single-minded in their attacking play and shooting rather than potentially finding a teammate.
