Crewe Alexandra wasted an early two-goal advantage as visitors Rotherham United fought back with a couple of late goals for a dramatic 3-3 draw at Gresty Road.

Newcomer Anthony Grant immediately drilled the hosts ahead on his debut and Max Clayton added a rapid second. But Lee Frecklington swiftly replied.

However, when Ryan Colclough was fouled inside the area, Harry Davis converted from the spot to restore the earlier advantage that was eventually cancelled out through further strikes from Ben Pringle and Frecklington.

It had earlier taken Grant only two minutes to make an impression with a deflected 25-yard shot past Scott Shearer. He was beaten again within seven minutes as Clayton turned in AJ Leitch-Smith’s cross following Colclough’s sweeping pass.

But Frecklington seized upon a loose ball to immediately reply from the edge of the area. Goalscorer Frecklington soon struck another effort wide before Kelvin Mellor headed straight at Shearer at the other end.

Alex Revell then showed plenty of determination to allow Frecklington to hoist another opportunity over for the visitors before himself narrowly missing the target.

It continued to be an open encounter and when Colclough was tripped early in the second-half, Davis stepped up to extend the home advantage from the penalty spot.

The Millers thought they were right back in it as Revell’s volley came back off the crossbar before also heading wide at the far post. Substitute Matt Tubbs then failed to properly connect while Colclough’s response could only find the clutches of Shearer.

Rotherham continued to press with Revell forcing another stop from Alan Martin until Pringle collected from Frecklington and curled in their second goal with four minutes remaining.

Then in added time a long throw into a crowded area found Frecklington’s well-directed half-volley claiming a dramatic last-gasp equaliser for the visitors.
