On loan teenager George Evans earned Crewe Alexandra the lead in their local derby with Port Vale, but Robert Taylor and Jennison Myrie-Williams replied to leave the hosts still in trouble near the bottom of the table.

Evans, who recently arrived on loan from Manchester City, swept home ten minutes before the break, only for Taylor to reply a couple of minutes from the end of the opening half.

Then with seven minutes of the contest remaining, Myrie-Williams claimed the winner for the visitors to keep them still on the edge of the play-offs.

Manager Steve Davis earlier made five changes to his side and also adopted a new formation. Defender Mark Ellis soon had a headed chance from a corner but couldn’t find the target.

Crewe could still have gone in front though when Evans fired against the foot of an upright following good work between Byron Moore and AJ Leitch-Smith.

Moore then forced keeper Chris Neal into a low stop before having a cross cleared only to Evans, who instantly returned a dipping finish into the top corner for the lead.

Vale replied with Myrie-Williams producing a save from on loan debutant keeper Neil Etheridge, who was though defeated by Taylor’s deflected effort just prior to the break.

Alex winger Moore curled wide after the interval, while Taylor was denied a second at the other end by the covering of Adam Dugdale following Etheridge’s punched clearance.

The Fulham loanee then did well to keep out Doug Loft before Myrie-Williams lifted over the target as his side continued to appear the stronger.

And they were to be rewarded when Myrie-Williams found himself on the end of Tom Pope’s cross and tapped in to finally prove the difference between the sides.
