Crewe Alexandra were undone by a last-minute winner from Shrewsbury Town at Gresty Road.
Larnell Cole wasted little time in putting the visitors ahead but Ryan Colclough equalised before the break.
However, Shaun Whalley struck very late on to leave the hosts now four points from immediate safety.
Shrewsbury had been short of victories over recent weeks but went in front as Cole’s eleventh-minute shot deflected beyond Ben Garratt.
On loan striker Ryan Lowe had a great opportunity to equalise when stabbing Marcus Haber’s cross directly at goalkeeper Mark Halstead.
However, the veteran forward was involved when Colclough slotted into the far corner to level.
Goalscorer Cole was too high following the interval while Halstead turned over from Colclough before diverting aside Lowe’s free-kick.
But the visitors almost went back ahead courtesy of substitute Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro against the near post and Scott Vernon missing the follow up.
Veteran Lowe was soon close again for their opponents before Whalley swerved in a dramatic late winner after a free-kick wasn’t properly cleared.
