Substitute Callum Saunders scored an injury-time equaliser to leave visitors Colchester United close to relegation following a 1-1 draw at Gresty Road.

George Moncur’s penalty had them in front midway through the second period after George Ray brought down Frankie Kent.

However, Saunders headed in James Jones’ late corner to rescue his side a point and end a sequence of seven consecutive defeats.

Alex Gilbey earlier volleyed wide for the visitors before having a further effort saved along with Moncur.

Crewe were largely restricted to George Ray’s header from Jones’ corner being turned aside by goalkeeper Elliott Parish.

But when the Welsh defender was penalised inside his own area it was Moncur despatching a second-half spot-kick and offering his colleagues hopes of the victory they required.

Jones’ reply was then saved by Parish and Ray’s ambitious strike from around 35-yards too high. David Fox’s free-kick and Saunders’ subsequent follow-up were also thwarted by the keeper.

He was though finally beaten when Saunders met Jones’ corner at the near post to claim the hosts a late equaliser.
