Late Comeback Feels Like A Defeat

|

Two goals in the final 15 minutes saw Cambridge United leave the Alexandra Stadium with a point against Crewe Alexandra yesterday afternoon despite Oli Finney and Celtic loanee Scott Robertson’s first for the club giving the hosts a 2-goal half-time lead.

Manager David Artell made two changes from Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Plymouth Argyle with Finney and Chris Porter coming in for Terell Thomas and Mika Mandron, who both dropped down to the bench, as we reverted back to the 4-3-3 formation,

The opening chance of the game came in the 4th minute with Jaaskelainen making a save from Jack Lankester’s effort before the Alex took the lead in the 10th minute with Porter knocking down a long ball allowing Finney to strike into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

The lead was doubled after 26 minutes with a throw-in leading to Finney flicking the ball into the path of Robertson who finished from 12 yards before Adam May would hit the post 7 minutes before the break, firing across Jaaskelainen against the base of the upright.

The visitors would get back into the game with 11 minutes to play as left-back Jack Iredale’s cross is turned into the net by substitute Sam Smith via a Jaaskelainen deflection before the equaliser came in the fourth minute of stoppage-time with May firing through a number of bodies into the bottom corner from just outside the area.

Our next couple of games see the Alex host Wigan Athletic in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday before travel to Fleetwood Town a week on Saturday (16th) following a mini-break due to the international break.

What can we take out of this game?

It’s as frustrating that’s 4 points dropped already just against the teams that came up from League 2 at home where we allowed the other team chance to come back into the game easily, a bad mistake against Cheltenham on the opening day by Donervon Daniels before sitting off Cambridge yesterday with substitutes Wes Hoolahan and Smith in particular key to their comeback late on.
