Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Phillips says the competition for the number one spot at Gresty Road is an ideal situation for the club.

“The club is in a very healthy position with goalkeepers” – Steve Phillips

The 34-year-old has recently recovered his starting place in the side after Alan Martin was laid low by illness. Phillips had earlier seen his own start to the season badly interrupted following a knee operation in the summer.

“The club is in a very healthy position with goalkeepers with Alan and Ben Garratt,” Phillips told This is Staffordshire. “We’re competitive and we get on with each other very well. It’s a tight-knit little group.

“From my point of view with my coach’s hat on, whoever steps in and does the business then it’s job done, they keep the shirt,” he continued. “Luckily that’s me at the moment.”
