Goalkeeper Steve Phillips has told his underperforming colleagues it’s time to stand up and be counted following Crewe Alexandra’s disappointing start to the season.

“To go down with a whimper like we did was nothing short of scandalous” – Steve Phillips

The Alex have managed just one win in seven attempts in the league so far and currently sit in eighteenth and only a single-point above the relegation places.

“We’ll see who comes to the top and see who sinks. I certainly won’t sink,” Phillips told BBC Radio Stoke. “I’m a fighter and I’m hoping there’s a few behind me who are with us. If you don’t you’re going to get relegated.”

Struggling Crewe went down again at the weekend after conceding three second-half goals to Walsall at Gresty Road.

“To go down with a whimper like we did was nothing short of scandalous,” Phillips added. “You need fighters in your team. That was by no means good enough.”
