Experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips has been ruled out for the start of the new season.

The 34-year-old is awaiting the results of recent tests to decide if he needs a minor operation to remove a lump on his knee.

However, manager Steve Davis remains hopeful that he won’t need surgery and can instead return at the earliest opportunity to challenge Alan Martin.

“We should know more about Steve on Friday or at the start of next week,” Davis told Crewe’s official website. “We do want him back as soon as possible to provide competition to Alan but I don’t expect Steve to be ready for the first few games. He is a bit behind in terms of the training and he hasn’t played any of the games.”
