Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Phillips is getting closer to a return to full training.

“It won’t be long before he’s back out on the training ground” – Neil Baker

The experienced 34-year-old hasn’t featured yet this season after needing surgery to remove a lump from his left knee.

In his absence, understudy Alan Martin has been performing well and this week kept his third clean-sheet in four games.

“Steve has been working with the fitness coaches and physios and he’s making good progress,” assistant manager Neil Baker told
This is Staffordshire. “It won’t be long before he’s back out on the training ground.

“Alan has been fine after being given an opportunity, stepping up to the plate very well,” he added. “When Steve does get back it will provide good competition, which is exactly what we want. It will be a good battle between those two for the gloves.”
