Experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips had backed current first-choice Alan Martin following his mistake against Burton Albion in the FA Cup at the weekend.

“Coming to claim that cross was a great decision but he just took his eye off the ball” – Steve Phillips

Martin misjudged a cross which he came out with the intention of punching clear and former Alex marksman Calvin Zola took maximum advantage with the only goal of the contest at Gresty Road.

But player-coach Phillips says his initial decision to come off his line was correct and that it was just a slight error in completing the task that unfortunately cost him.

‘He’s progressed massively since I’ve been a coach with his positional play and shot stopping. I’m really happy with him,” Phillips told This is Staffordshire. “He’s made a couple of mistakes recently. Coming to claim that cross was a great decision but he just took his eye off the ball for a split second. We will chat about it and practice.

“When keepers make a mistake it can cost a goal and sometimes that’s it,” he added. “It’s happened to me in the past and could again even at my age, you just have to get on with it.”
