Could Crewe be about to pull a New Year surprise out of the hat with the appointment of Jim Gannon as manager?

Unlikely I would say but some media sources seem to have picked up on a possibility.

Today The Sun and the Manchester Evening News both suggest that Gannon is to be announced new Crewe Alex manager in the coming days.

The former Stockport manager left Motherwell yesterday after falling out with the ‘well chairman and promptly arrived at Macclesfield to watch the Alex take on the Silkmen.

The 41 year old masterminded Stockport’s rise from the bottom of League Two to League One in the space of a couple of seasons upon taking the Hatters job in 2006. After financial uncertainty at Edgeley Park this year Gannon quit the Hatters before taking the Motherwell job a month later.

After his year in the Alex defence back in 2000/2001 Gannon has remained on good terms with figures at Gresty Road and he has been linked with the manager’s job on both occasions following the sackings of Holland and Thordarson in the last year.

His appointment this week would be a surprise to say the very least. The club have given no indication that they are actively seeking a new manager whilst Dario seems to be settling back into his role nicely, with a lot of transfer activity in recent days – not what you’d expect from a club about to make a new appointment.

The story doesn’t add up with where the club is at at the moment but football is a funny old game so you can’t discount the possibility completely. Gannon after all would be the ideal appointment for the club – perhaps we’ve just been waiting for his availability?

Who knows? I won’t be holding my breath anyway.
