It’s nice to model ourselves on Crewe

&linktitleStockport County manager Jim Gannon was very complimentary towards Dario and the club this week. Is he after a new job?

The former County defender played at Gresty Road for six months at the end of the 00/01 campaign and says he’ll always have respect for Dario after being given that opportunity.

Gannon went on to tell manchestereveningnews.co.uk of his respect for the club having modeled his Stockport side on the Alex.

‘I’ll always have respect for Crewe as when I had a difficult time at this club and I wasn’t wanted and Dario gave me an opportunity and I’ll always be respectful of that. It was also as an aspiring coach to work for him for six months.’

‘It’s nice to model ourselves on Crewe, developing young players playing football in the right manner, that’s Dario’s philosophy,. We’re taking that philosophy and implementing it at this club. If we get half the respect at this club that Crewe have had over the last 20 years I’ll be delighted.’

Of course, mostly it’s your bog standard opposition talk but with the manager’s position at Gresty Road now vacant, Jim Gannon fits the job description put out by John Bowler to a tee.

A young but proven manager with some experience. Someone who’d be an asset to the club, who would take an active interest in the academy side too. Someone not in it for the short term, and someone who is his own man.

Gannon recently rejected a contract offer from Stockport that he described as ‘unacceptable’. Maybe a chance to poach him from his one year rolling deal?

Gannon took over Stockport when they were five points adrift at the bottom of League Two. Within three years he’s transformed them into potential play-off contenders in League One.

With the Alex in a position to offer the next manager (relatively) long term security, a patient board of Directors, probably a healthy pay packet, money available for the January transfer window and facilities & academy up there with some of the best in the Championship – it’s quite a healthy offer to a lot of managers.

Gannon would certainly be my first choice and I’d be surprised if the board don’t seriously consider an approach over the next week or two. Especially if he gets one over us later today.
