Saturday’s defeat leaves us as close to relegation to League Two as we’ve been all season. Despite Gudjon’s dramatic turn around in 2009, manager of the month award in February and the wave of optimism that spread throughout the Alex we still find ourselves in deep in it.
The realisation that we are still in a relegation dog fight has slowly crept up on us this month with the Cheltenham defeat really ringing the alarm bells. It was a game where at times we looked like we would go on and score a hat full but ended up wounded and embarrassed.
The complete lack of goals in the team cropped up again, having now scored just two goals in our last five games. If the draught continues then we can almost certainly prepare for life in League Two.
A lot will depend on these next few days. Brighton travel to Bristol Rovers whilst Northampton play Scunthorpe this Tuesday night, both teams a point behind anything but two defeats in those games will dump us in the relegation zone. We could find ourselves 22nd going into Friday night’s trip to Stockport.
Worst case scenario would leave us two points from safety, a defeat at Stockport would make survival extremely difficult. On the other hand the best case scenario could see us safe going into the final game of the season at home to Champions Leicester.
It’s all ifs and buts, football goes slightly crazy at this point of the season, every goal matters and you can’t yet discount anyone; even Hartlepool on 50 points. Sit tight and hope!
