It was a game that was too exciting!

Assistant manager Neil Baker was pleased with the club’s first league win of the season as two new signings, Elding and Grant, saw Walsall off.

The two first half goals were enough to give the Alex all three points against a poor Walsall side, and whilst Walsall’s Stephen Hughes added a second half consolation, the likes of Elding and Pope could easily have added further to Crewe’s total.

Speaking to the official site, crewealex.net, following the game assistant manager Neil Baker expressed his delight with the team, in particular goal scorer Joel Grant.

Baker said: ‘It was a game that was too exciting! A game can be like that for us but not for the crowd. Who would we have taken off for a substitution? We were still looking dangerous late on and should really have wrapped the game up a lot earlier.

‘We have been waiting and working with Joel, working on his finishing and have said to him if he adds goals to his games we have one good player on our hands. I think that when the man of the match award was announced, the supporters reactions says it all.

‘We have played two good teams before today, and last week was encouraging although we lost. To see the players training this week, especially on Thursday we had high hopes for this weekend, they trained really well and worked hard.’

Crewe now have a tough test against Nicky Maynard’s new side Bristol City in the second round of the Carling Cup this Tuesday before a trip to newly promoted Hereford United, who lost 6-1 to Bristol Rovers yesterday.
