Steve Holland believes his side should have come away with three points after Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to MK Dons.

The Alex manager was rueing his luck as the likes of Calvin Zola and Michael O’Connor squandered chance after chance to tie up our first win in seven games.

Crewe had fallen behind early on in the game, which saw the first signs of a protest from fans against Steve Holland, but a good response from the team saw us go in at half time 2-1 up and quite comfortable. However, having missed chance after chance to extend the lead, it was inevitable that the Dons – a hot tip for promotion this year – were going to get the equaliser. With 11 minutes on the clock former Man Utd and Stoke winger Luke Chadwick took advantage of the Alex’s defensive frailties.

Steve Holland told crewealex.net of his disappointment after the game: ‘It was a bad start to concede that goal, but the players showed good character after that. Across the game in the end though, we had enough chances to have won the game. It should have been over by half time really.

‘Clayton Donaldson had two good chances, one in the first and in the second half he was one-on-one with the keeper to beat. That is the way it has been in a fair amount of our recent fixtures, we have just lacked that real cutting edge in front of goal.

‘I don’t think the first goal was very good defensively, there wasn’t a lot going on and then suddenly they are in the heart of our defence and the ball is in the back of the net.’

With the daggers out, every move Holland makes is being scrutinised but he hit back at anyone who felt dropping [somehow] fans favourite Tom Pope was a risky move:

‘It wasn’t a brave decision to drop Tom Pope. All our forwards are good, if you are looking at starts per goals, they all average one goal in three. Calvin, I’m told it was his goal, will have more than that. Pope I think had played slightly more games and scored one more goal.’
