Hugely annoying and frustrating

Steve Holland was rightly annoyed with his team having thrown away a 3-2 lead this afternoon.

The first team coach saw a rollercoaster of a game at home to Southend. Having gone 2-0 down in the first 20 minutes, goals from O’Connor and Pope saw the Alex in level at half time. Calvin Zola then put us ahead 20 minutes into the second half, but having dominated Southend comical defending allowed the Shrimpers to take two goals and all three points.

Defensive mistakes could easily be put down for all four of Southend’s goals and that’s what makes defeat today so hard to swallow, especially having dominated possession in the second half.

Steve Holland told crewealex.net: ‘We played some decent football at times and got a goal back from Michael O’Connor shooting from outside of the box. Tom Pope took a really good equaliser, and it’s 2-2. I was saying at half time that that was a real positive, the attitude to get back in the game from being two behind.

‘We got a terrific third goal, Calvin who finally put it in from close range. You enter the final quarter of the game 3-2 up having been 2-0 down, and I thought we looked dangerous and there was another goal for us. So to end up losing the game from that position is hugely annoying and frustrating.

‘Their equaliser was a cross we didn’t stop very well again, from the left back position, and again without seeing it again, Freedman has controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed it into the back of the net. Somebody can’t be right there, if you give a player of his quality that sort of time then you are going to be in trouble.

‘The goal in the end that has cost us the points is frankly suicide. The first thing you teach at under eight is that if he is the last man, not to take on the opposing centre forward. I’m afraid if you do that at this level then there is only one consequence.’
