Hope At Fortress Gresty

Gudjon made it three home wins on the trot with a fantastic 3-1 win over Huddersfield.

Outplaying a play-off chasing Huddersfield side, the Alex were unrecognisable from Steve Holland’s ‘troops’ that got us into this mess.

All down to Thordarson, who has made his changes and stuck by them since arriving, even when fans were ready to turn. With three in the centre of defence, Woodards in midfield and Byron Moore returning to the team it could well have been a recipe for disaster.

In the end Crewe 3-1 Huddersfield. It was a performance that showed we aren’t quite ready for League Two just yet.

Tom Pope up front was outstanding. I’ve never been his biggest fan but it’s the best I’ve seen him play, and his goal was a credit to him and the effort he puts in. Good job it wasn’t all just ‘effort’ from Popey too, he’s also found confidence to take defenders on, as showed when he created his own chance to hit the post.

He was nearly matched up there by Byron Moore, one player I’ve written off several times, thankfully I may be wrong. Finally a gutsy performance from Byron and a good goal to boot.

The defence also continued it’s recent resurgence. Frankly we were unfortunate to concede at all, but hey ho. It’s still only three conceded in the last four games, to opposition fans that’s a pretty tragic boast but it means a lot to us! Well, me. Though I will point out Dario held a better record in his brief spell in December.

I’ll pick Brayford and Lawrence as the outstanding pair in defence. Brayford came up against possibly the toughest he’ll play this season in Gary Roberts, our former loanee, and it’s a struggle to remember Roberts ever getting past Brayford. Lawrence; well he was a general, a saviour of our defence. I’d have him signed up for next season, if Swansea don’t mind that is.

The team as a whole were worthy of a good solid win. It’ll be frustrating for the opposition though, as much as we may ignore it; I think we are now classed as a negative side. Negative football, hoofball, 11 men behind the ball…. but if it keeps us up could we care less?

It’s unfortunate that such a good day had to be ruined by poor results around us. Brighton, Orient and Swindon all won meaning we’re actually not much better off than we were at the start of the day. Still, with the struggling sides of Yeovil and Brighton to come in the next six days that could all change.
