As Cheltenham are the visitors to Gresty Road this Saturday, Steve Holland has talked about the deal that nearly brought Robins striker Damien Spencer to Crewe. The surprised £150,000 deal was struck in January but a medical that revealed a long term worry with a knee brought the deal to an abrupt end.
Spencer was set to play the ‘target man’ role, one Holland was desperate to fill in a frustrating January period but in the end failed to do. It left the first team coach frustrated having to take rejection after rejection.
Holland reflected on the deal: ‘Although he is not prolific in terms of goals, we thought he would have provided that physical presence up there,’ Holland told Crewe’s official website.
‘It was a shame things didn’t work out because he is a good player.’
As it turns out though, Spencer will miss Saturday’s match having recently gone under the knife on the very same knee injury that denied him the move.
