Premiership heavyweights Arsenal and Manchester United could be about to battle it out for Crewe Alexandra teenage starlet Max Clayton.

The eighteen-year-old is rapidly closing in on fifty senior appearances, with the majority of them as a substitute, since originally making his debut for the Alex some two-and-a-half years ago.

Clayton has represented England at every age level up to under-19 and has already had leading scouts flocking to see him in action with a view to a possible £3m move. Newcastle United are another of the clubs believed to be keen.

However, Alex chief Steve Davis recently denied rumours of any deal for the highly-rated forward already being in place with Arsenal after their manager Arsene Wenger received strong recommendations from his former coach Pat Rice.

Crewe recently sold fellow teenager Nick Powell to Manchester United in a deal worth around £5m in the summer.
