Crewe Alexandra’s problems continued as Aiden O’Brien scored a hat-trick for Millwall in a 3-1 victory at Gresty Road.
The 21-year-old turned in Carlos Edwards’ cross towards the far post midway through the opening half but Brad Inman’s shot fortunately deflected off Lauri Dalla Valle for the equaliser.
However, O’Brien lashed in a second from distance with more than an hour played and then completed his hat-trick with sixteen minutes remaining.
Welsh international Steve Morison earlier called home keeper Ben Garratt into action before Edwards set up O’Brien for the opening goal.
Chris Atkinson saw his reply charged down but goalkeeper Jordan Archer was soon wrong-footed when Inman’s strike diverted off Dalla Valle into the net.
Crewe went close again following the break with Archer saving in quick succession from skipper Harry Davis and goalscorer Dalla Valle.
That was to prove crucial as O’Brien’s reply from around 25-yards beat Garratt at his near post before the young Irishman later twisted beyond opponents to claim his hat-trick.
