Goalkeeper Alan Martin is firmly targeting a debut for Crewe Alexandra in the Capital One Cup.

The 23-year-old Scot has yet to make his senior bow for the club but a recent injury to regular keeper Steve Phillips has suddenly opened the door for him.

“I want to take advantage while Steve isn’t fit. I have to try to keep the place,” Martin explained to the Crewe Chronicle. “Hopefully I can impress enough to stay in the starting line-up. I want to take that pressure on my shoulders. I want to be a first-teamer, I don’t want to be sitting on the bench.”

Experienced keeper Phillips, 34, visited a consultant earlier this week and could struggle to make the first competitive game of the season against Hartlepool United early next month.
