Johnson To Leave After Club Withdraws Contract

|

Crewe Alexandra have announced that full-back Travis Johnson will be leaving the club this summer after manager Alex Morris withdrew his contract offer.

Johnson, 21, came through the Alex’s academy system before making his first-team debut in the EFL Trophy against Mansfield Town in October 2019 before making his league debut the following January at Swindon Town. He would go on loan to Witton Albion at the end of that season (which was curtailed due to Covid) before returning to the Alex where he would make 40 first-team appearances – including 25 this season.

As a result of the club withdrawing the offer, Johnson will leave the club on a free transfer rather than receive a compensation fee.

What will this mean for both the club going forward as well as Johnson?

It currently leaves the club without a recognised right-back in the squad but it shows that Morris won’t be messed around when it comes to contract negotiations.

As for Johnson, it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up, whether he’ll find another League 2 club or have to drop into non-league before trying to work his way back into the Football League.
