Four Star Performance Sees Alex Top Again

|

Goals from Nicky Hunt, Daniel Powell (both scoring their first goals for the club), Chris Porter and a Gethin Jones own goal saw Crewe Alexandra return to the top of the table after a win at Carlisle United yesterday afternoon.

Manager David Artell made 6 changes from Tuesday’s penalty win in the EFL Trophy with Hunt, Harry Pickering, Tom Lowery, Paul Green, Powell and Porter all returned into the team with James Jones, Callum Ainley, Ollie Finney, Chuma Anene and Travis Johnson all dropping down to the bench while Rio Adebisi missing out on the matchday 18. Former Alex loanee Harry McKirdy was on the substitutes’ bench for the hosts.

The first chance of the game saw Powell shoot straight at Adam Collin in the sixth minute before the visitors take the lead a minute later with Lowery’s free-kick finished by Hunt from close-range. Their second goal came 20 minutes later with Powell finishing from the edge of the area while the hosts had a couple of efforts from Hallam Hope before the break.

The second half saw Pickering test Collin after a good move that contained Porter and Lowery before the hosts got themselves level after 2 goals in 5 minutes. Jack Iredale delivered from the left with Hope scoring from close range before right-back Elliott scored the equaliser, getting on the end of another Iredale cross at the back post.

Crewe retook the lead with 12 minutes to play with substitute James Jones crossing for the big man to side-foot home before that lead was extended 6 minutes later with Ng’s cross turned in by defender Gethin Jones into his own goal.

We have the first of two home games with Swindon Town arriving in South Cheshire next Saturday before Colchester United make the long trip north the following Tuesday.

What can we learn from this game?

It’s another game that we’ll have lost in previous seasons after giving away another 2 goal lead but we’ve still shown that resilience that has been a key part of our season so far.

Good to see that Powell (and to a smaller part Hunt) are now off the mark for the club and now 11 different players have scored in all competitions already.
