Former trialist Jake Buxton has signed for Burton Albion days after his trial at the Alex came to an end.

The former Mansfield captain spent two weeks on trial, in which he played friendlies against Quorn & Wrexham, before Steve Holland decided not to pursue his interest last week.

Over the weekend Buxton made a surprise appearance for Burton Albion in their 1-0 win over Walsall and manager Nigel Clough was delighted when Buxton decided to join the Brewers.

Clough told burtonmail.co.uk: ‘We’ve been talking and talking for weeks, and if you’d said at the start of pre-season, who were the two signings at the top of our list, it was Greg Pearson and Jake Buxton, and now we’ve got both of them.’

The 23 year old was being looked at as a potential defensive ‘problem solver’ as Holland looks for a new centre back to partner captain Baudet. Further trialists are expected over the weekend, including former FC Porto defender Fabio Ervoes.
