He was subject of a month long chase by Crewe in January before he turned us down, now Stuart Fleetwood begins life at Charlton Athletic.

The Alex had a £200,000 bid accepted for the former Cardiff and Hereford striker after he had scored 26 goals before the January transfer window for Forest Green Rovers. Forest Green, Fleetwood and Mr Agent kept Steve Holland and the club waiting over several issues throughout the transfer window before it transpired that Fleetwood never had any intention to move north of Watford Gap anyway.

Instead he stuck with Blue Square Premier battlers Forest Green Rovers where he scored just a further six goals in the final three months of the season. With his contract up this summer he had always stated his desire to move on after a year at Rovers.

So began another Fleetwood saga and for the past 6 weeks it’s been another ‘will he/won’t he’ marathon. This time Fleetwood & his agent got their way. After receiving interest from the likes of Chester, Brentford and Exeter, they finally tempted Charlton to make an offer for the 23 year old.

It still took another few weeks before Fleetwood penned a contract with Alan Pardew’s men but today it was confirmed that he was a Charlton Athletic player.

Fleetwood joins a whole host of better quality strikers at the Valley with the likes of Luke Varney, Marcus Bent, Izale McLeod, Chris Iwelumo, Svetoslav Todorov and Chris Dickson all fighting it out for a place up front.

Who says it’s all about money these days?
