Former Crewe Alexandra skipper David Artell is thinking over an offer from Port Vale and will make a final decision this weekend.

The 31-year-old was released at the end of last season and is a target for a number of other clubs. But it seems as if local rivals Vale are in prime position for his services as manager Micky Adams continues to rebuild.

“I spoke to Micky Adams three weeks ago and he made me an offer,” Artell told This is Staffordshire. “I was interested straight away. It’s a good club with passionate fans and it’s definitely something I am looking at.

“It’s not all about money or even security,” he added. “At my age I want to be enjoying my football, so I am looking for a club that is likely to be challenging for promotion.”

Artell made 37 appearances for Alex last season and skippered them in their 2-0 victory over Cheltenham Town in the play-off final at Wembley.
