Former Alex midfielder Gary Roberts has been handed a trial by Port Vale despite proving himself to be a liability.

After coming through the club’s academy and going on to make over 100 appearances for the club, Roberts left the Alex in 2008 after falling out with then manager Steve Holland.

Failure to turn up to training twice saw him disciplined by the club before he was told to find a new club in summer 2008. He went on to join Yeovil before more discipline problems saw his time at Huish Park end within 12 months in August 2009.

After admitting problems with drink and gambling, Roberts attended the Sporting Chance clinic before being given another chance by Rotherham United. However, within six months Roberts was once again thrown out in April of this year as Rotherham cancelled his contract due to poor discipline.

The 23 year old, who has represented England at Under 19 level, is now seeking another chance as a professional footballer at Port Vale.

Having secured a trial at Vale Park, Roberts says it’s ‘time to grow up’, but haven’t we heard that one before?

Speaking to The Sentinel, Roberts said:

It’s time to grow up especially because I’m now a father and have responsibilities.

‘All I want is a fresh start because I don’t want people talking about my past, it’s the future which is important.

‘This is a chance to turn my career around, hopefully win a contract and produce some good performances.’

Meanwhile, Vale manager Mickey Adams says that one step out of line from Roberts and he will be sent packing.

“If he steps out of line he’ll be gone and I’ve laid everything out to him. He’s got a bit of baggage, but I’ve handled bigger and better players than him.

‘If he messes about and doesn’t give it his best shot he’ll be down the road.

I went down to see Vale at Market Harborough yesterday and he appeared reasonably sober… maybe he has turned over a new leaf!
