Young keeper Owain Fon Williams has been offered the number one shirt should he sign a new contract.

The Wales U-21 international has been linked with a move to various Premiership and Championship clubs this season despite having never played a competitive first team game for the Alex.

It was looking doubtful if Williams would remain at Gresty Road beyond his contract expiring in the summer after the club decided to remain silent over the situation, and not play Williams towards the end of the season.

However, Steve Holland has today told crewealex.net that he hopes Williams will stay at the club to be the number one keeper next season.

Holland said: ‘Owain has not signed his new contract but we remain hopeful that he will. The attraction of being our number one keeper in League One and playing regularly as a 21-year-old would be a good experience for him.

‘He has received some exposure with the Welsh Under-21’s and perhaps he has been advised that his future lies elsewhere. Saying that we have no contact from anyone regarding Owain and there would be a compensation fee involved anyhow because we is Under-24.’

Current first choice ‘keeper Ben Williams looks certain to leave Gresty Road, despite securing League One football for next season. Williams had earlier asked to think about his 3 year contract offer but all noises from the club suggest he will be leaving.
