Manager Steve Davis made changes for the Capital One Cup tie at West Ham United in a bid to give more of his players some vital match action.

“I wanted to give one or two a go and help them improve their match fitness” – Steve Davis

The Alex chief recalled Kelvin Mellor following injury in addition to Max Clayton, while also handing a first start to on loan Manchester City striker Harry Bunn.

Meanwhile, Adam Dugdale, Abdul Osman and injured leading scorer Mathias Poigba all made way. That witnessed Harry Davis being paired with Mark Ellis in central defence and skipper Ashley Westwoood partnering Luke Murphy in midfield.

“I wanted to give one or two a go and help them improve their match fitness,” Davis told Crewe’s official website. “Max needed a game. He has been a bit of a bit-part player for us and needed 90 minutes. Kelvin is now back fit and needs games after missing the pre-season.

“I also wanted to pair Westy and Murph in the middle,” he continued. “I left Duggy out because I thought he was a bit tired and was in need of a rest. It also gave me the opportunity to pair Mark and Harry together because they haven’t had that much opportunity to play together.”
